American Food Market

Ok, I have to admit it. I am a bit homesick. I don't know if it was missing the big vote or all the seemingly exciting activities of late going down at home (Halloween, new babies, Sarah leaving, etc, etc.), but I miss the USA a bit... hence, I have decided to buy a few things from the American Food Market online store to celebrate Thanksgiving and remind me of home.

I wanted to review the online store, not only because I just bought a bunch of stuff there, but because I was really impressed by the experience. Usually these types of stores are kinda thrown together and everything looks like it is 'in stock' but then it is not, but so far, so good. The checkout process was easy, the prices were reasonable, and I got a verification email immediately. Impressed, I am.

Let's hope the stuff I ordered to remind me of home works as well. :) And that it comes in time for Thanksgiving! :)

Hi Jessica :O)

I know how you feel. Now that Obama will be taking over, I finally feel "American" again...kwim? Anyhoo...just wanted to give you some info. Not sure if you have a department store called Karstadt there or not, but often they have a small American section where you can buy food stuff too. Or check out the big & fancy department stores for an American food section...at least in Berlin, that's where I can always get my fix on stuff like that.

So what did you order? I always go for the cake mixes and frosting since I am not a very good cake baker and even worse frosting maker!

Thanks, Kathryn.

Not sure if we have Karstadt here, but I will check! I ordered this:

2 Kraft Stove Top Turkey
2 Ocean Spray Jellied Cranberry Sauce
1 Carnation Evaporated Milk (to make pumpkin pie!!!)
1 Libby's 100% Pure Pumpkin
1 Keebler Ready Crust Graham Pie Crust
1 Domino Light Brown Sugar

Nothing too exciting, but good stuff for a Thanksgiving feast! :)

Hi Jessica - I am finally in Geneva (just arrived yesterday) - but I happened out of complete luck to actually run into the American store!!! It was a decent size (think large gas station) near the main train station. I stared at buying the vitamin waters they had in the window! Good luck with the thanksgiving cooking with the american products!!!

I still find CHF 10,50 a lot for Lucky Charms...although in a desperate moment I could fall prey.

You can find Karstadt in Germany -- Konstanz is the closest I think.

I have seriously considered getting myself some Kraft Mac n Chz from the USA shop, but so far I have resisted! LOL!

I get homesick a lot as well. I think the feeling never goes away, but I try to make myself comfortable and at home here, order A LOT of things from anyone heading in that direction, and of course, I look forward to every trip back. It makes life exciting, actually.

last Thanksgiving, while I was still living in the US, I was visiting some American frineds in Vienna. We had quite a time trying to find everything we wanted for our Thanksgiving dinner.
Luckily we have a friend who works for an embassy and were able to get stovetop stuffing, instant mashed potatoes, cranberries, and a turkey from the UN store. :-) We found the canned pumpkin, condensed milk, and something somewhat resembling pie crust at a British store, and spent a few more hours searching for whipped cream and gelitan (for no bake pie).
Unfortunately we weren't able to find sweet potatoes...
